   Nanonets

 

   Electrospun nanofibrous membranes comprising one-dimensional nanofibers have a typical fiber diameter in the range of 100–500 nm. The nano-effect of fibers becomes more significant when their average fiber diameters are less than 20 nm. However, the reduction of the electrospun fiber diameter is still a serious challenge. So far, the electrospun fibers with an average diameter below 20 nm are difficult to produce repeatedly and uniformly for most electrospinnable materials.

   Here, we report a facile and versatile approach for the large-scale fabrication of spider-web-like nanowebs comprising ultra-thin fibers via a modified electrospinning technique. The average diameter of nanowire in nanowebs is 16 nm. The hole size of nanowebs is in the range of 20–100 nm. Additionally, the shape of the most of holes in the nanowebs is uniform hexagonal in the rule of Steiner Minimum Tree. Therefore, the nanowebs can be used as ultra-fine filters to intercept the viruses and bacteria such as H1N1 virus, SARS virus, E-coli, etc. Moreover, the nanowebs with the advantages of high specific surface, fine structures, and good mechanical properties can also be applied in various potential applications such as catalysis, pharmacy, tissue engineering, sensors, biotechnology, etc.
